Augmentation Mammoplasty

Augmentation Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at enlarging and/or
improving the form of the breasts.
One of the main reasons that a patient may decide to undergo this kind of procedure
is to increase the volume breasts and/or realign uneven breasts. Breast implants are
pouches made of silicone containing a filler gel, which can be more or less fluid based
on the substance selected. The most common breast implant devices are made of
polyurethane or textured implants. The incision is usually made at the inframammary
fold, around the areola (upper and lower peri-areolar incision) or in the armpit
(transaxillary incision). The most natural incision is under the breasts at the
inframammary fold because it doesn’t touch the gland. Through the incision, the
breast tissues are raised to create a pocket located behind the gland or under the
pectoral muscles. The sub-muscular implantation reduces potential risks of rupture,
but gives you less control in the event of dislocation of the prosthesis. The peri-
areolar route gives the surgeon additional visibility when operating and leaves a less
visible scar compared to the inframammary fold route. In the area around the incision
there may be some hypersensitivity, hyposensitivity or numbness, however these
symptoms usually disappear over time. There is no scientific evidence to demonstrate
the existence of a cause-and-effect relationship between breast implants and breast
cancer, however, mammogram procedures need to be improved. After surgery the
patient must wear a special bra, day and night, for one month, to keep the prosthesis
in the pocket where it was implanted. The stitches are removed after 10 days;
swelling disappears after 4-6 weeks. It’s recommended that the patient does not
exercise for 15 day and intensive exercise may be resumed only after 6 weeks.
